Our Lady of Fatima 'Give Back to the Community' Project

The Grade 8 students of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School were busy in November getting ready for our “Give Back to the Community” Project.  They were making bracelets, anklets, key chains and necklaces to sell at the school to raise money for the Longlac Christmas Food Drive.  Each item had a message such as WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?), Pray, Ask God, and Jesus Loves you.  The students sold these items on Friday, December 2nd and were sold out by the end of the morning.  We would like to thank all the parents who supported their efforts.  The students raised $154!  On Monday, December 5th, we invited Elaine Mannisto, a volunteer organizer for the Longlac Christmas Food Hampers, to come to our class.  She explained the process of collection and distribution of the food items and gifts.  We then presented her with the money we raised.  It felt good to help those in need in our community.

In order to help our global community, the students have also been collecting money for Gifts of Compassion.  We raised enough money to buy 2 chickens for a child in Rwanda, or India and a mosquito net for a child in India.  A chicken isn’t just food for the child, but a source of income, a supply of eggs and manure for a vegetable garden.  A mosquito net can help a child sleep mosquito-free with an insecticide-treated bed net.

We will continue our “Give Back to the Community” Project throughout the year.  Keep a lookout for our next venture!
