Each board in Ontario has been funded for a leader of the Student Success Initiative. Funding is ongoing under the Learning Opportunities Grant.
“The leader is a coalition builder and capacity builder who leads colleagues to a deep and rich understanding of the barriers to achievement for students at risk. He or she is dedicated to developing and implementing strategies and programs to ensure that students graduate with the literacy and numeracy skills they need for a seamless transition to the workplace, college or university.” (The Report of the Expert Panel on Students At Risk in Ontario, 2003)
The Student Success leader is responsible for:
· Establishing and maintaining a board-wide student success team
· Establishing a district-wide vision and guiding principles for literacy, mathematical literacy, program pathways and community culture and caring
· Supporting the review of existing achievement data and practices
· Networking with Student Success leaders across the province to share strategies
· Supporting schools with the development of professional learning communities
· Supporting schools that have innovative ideas to help students who are at risk and engage in action research
· Implementing a professional development and training plan for teachers, administrators, volunteers and community partners that meet the needs of the board and align with Ministry initiatives
· Facilitating dialogue between elementary and secondary panels
· Ensuring that parents and students leaving elementary school are aware of the choices available in secondary and beyond
· Being a champion of the program and doing “whatever it takes” to help our students to be successful in their educational goals

The student success team consists of board administrative team, principals, classroom teachers, special assignment teachers and the student success leader. Committee initiatives have been communicated to stakeholders through the Student Success Newsletter and Presentations to Board Members. The following outlines areas of focus for 2008/2009:
· Collecting and analyzing school based and provincial data. School Student Success Plans will address the evidence they have regarding students moving forward and areas in need of focus. School Based goals will be established.
· Continued to focus on consistent implementation of effective instruction as outlined in the Expert Panel Reports and supporting documents.
· Differentiated Instruction in literacy, numeracy and assessment.
· Assessment for Learning
· Communications Plan
In summary, in 2008/2009 we will consolidate professional learning and refine instructional practices as outlined in the expert panel reports for student success. Schools will continue to monitor the impact of instructional practice and collect evidence to support the use of these practices and their effectiveness.
