Go Purple for Prevention
October is national Child Abuse Prevention Month. In 2009, Dilico and the Children’s Aid Society of The District of Thunder Bay (CAS) introduced the Step Up campaign in Thunder Bay and District. Throughout the month of October, residents, businesses, schools, individuals and families, step up annually, to show their willingness to take responsibility for the safety, happiness and health of local children by participating in the Step Up community initiatives. This years theme was “We Rock Together”.
On October 24th, Superior North Catholic District School Board participated in Go Purple for Prevention. Purple is the signature colour of child abuse prevention month. For St. Edward Catholic School participating was easy - staff and students wore purple to help raise awareness and even coordinated fun events and activities!
St. Edward Catholic School students participated in the Step Up Stepping Stones Project. This project was about spreading joy and positivity in the community. Students were encouraged to find a perfect rock and then get creative by decorating their rock with images and designs that spark joy, along with happy, inspiring, and motivational words and messages. As part of the project, students then hid the rocks around their community. If you find a rock, take a picture of where you found it (with the rock in the photo of course), and share it on social media using the hashtag #StepUp so that the person who hid it in the first place can follow its journey, and then re-hide it in a new location.
The Step Up campaign reminds us that we are all responsible for the health, happiness and well-being of children and youth in our communities and our schools are proud to take part in such an important initiative.
