Gr. 3/4 Sketching at St. Hilary Catholic School
Students in Grade ¾ at St. Hilary Catholic School in Red Rock had a unique experiential learning experience this winter. Thanks to digital tools, students learned sketching skills from an artist through Zoom. Rebekah who operates as Rebekah’s Fine Art taught students sketching skills, using only pencil, pencil crayons and an eraser. Learning from experts in the community enriches students learning and enhances their context for learning. Students are able to see first hand what an artist does and the skill set they have supports students' pathways to success, informing the question of who do I want to become.
The three-part sketching series ran from February 19 - March 5. Students were able to build upon students' skills throughout the sessions focusing on seeing the big shapes in a picture which help to create an accurate drawing, observing where the light is creating highlights and shadows, layering colors to create depth and 3D look, learning how water behaves in different forms ie, droplets, reflective puddle, and moving waterfall and how to draw it to create that illusion. Students were very proud of their work and have uploaded photos of their pieces to their digital portfolio.
Here are some images of students' work.
