Kindergarten Experiential Learning Project
The Kindergarten team at St. Edward Catholic School in Nipigon joined forces to provide hands-on learning experiences (particularly outdoor learning opportunities) that would promote personal growth and skills connected to student interests. One community partner, Paul Foulds taught the students about bird houses and feeding birds during the winter. He helped us to build a platform feeder and recommended that we use black oil seed because it is easier for birds to spot from a distance. We spotted some woodpeckers and chickadees.
A large sensory table, an outdoor playhouse and picnic tables were also purchased to promote imaginary play, outdoor workspaces and exploratory fun. The classes will also be ordering outdoor gardening equipment as the students became very excited about planting grass seed and bean plants this year! We are currently looking at purchasing rain barrels, binoculars to bird-watch, and hooks to hang hands-on activities along the fence. We are looking forward to more outdoor play opportunities and to working with more community partners upon our return to in-person learning.
