'Growing Young Movers' at Saint Edward's School
Growing Young Movers will begin for students at Saint Edward's Catholic School on January 18, 2017.
What is G.Y.M.?
"Growing Young Movers (G.Y.M.) Youth Development Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the social, emotional, and physical well-being of children and youth through a three-pillar approach: Programming, Knowledge-Mobilization, and Supports. Underpinned throughout all three pillars is our commitment to research alongside youth, families, and communities. It is a program developed three years ago at the Kitchener Community School gymnasium by three researchers. Doctor Sean Lessard, Doctor Lee Schaefer and doctoral student and program coordinator Brian Lewis." From the Growing Young Movers' website.
“A gymnasium or any movement centre can be a really positive place but it an also be a really negative place, it’s all how it’s approached. We play a lot of things that are inclusive, everyone is involved.” - Brian Lewis
Growing Young Movers starting at Saint Edward Catholic School
Growing Young Movers (G.Y.M.) will teach personal and social responsibility while creating a positive learning space in the gymnasium at Saint Edward School.
Local volunteers will implement this initiative as an after-school program.
It will run each Wednesday after school from 3:15 pm - 4:45 pm for all students from Grades 5-8, beginning January 18, 2017.
We are partnering with Red Rock Indian Band to open the program to all youth in the community, including students from our co-terminus school at Superior-Greenstone District School Board. The activities will be structured, with the goal of promoting creativity within the students.
We will start the program on January 18th at 3:15 pm. If you wish to volunteer please feel free to contact us as well.
