Cellphone use in schools
Students’ use of mobile devices in schools is now restricted during instructional time.
These changes will:
- help improve learning in the classroom
- keep kids focused
- promote better mental health and well-being
For students in kindergarten to Grade 6, this applies to the entire school day.
Cellphones are not permitted during instructional time for students in Grades 7 and 8, except if the teacher allows it as a tool for learning during specified instructional time. For students in kindergarten to Grade 6, this applies to the entire school day.
Cell phones must remain in students' backpacks during the school day.
In some circumstances, use of a mobile device is allowed during learning time when:
- it is used for educational purposes, as directed by a teacher
- it is needed for health or medical reasons
- it supports special education needs
If Cell Phones Are Used Inappropriately:
Grades K-6: Students who misuse their phones must give them to their teacher or supervisor. The phone will be kept in a safe storage area.
Grades 7-8: Students who misuse their phones will be asked to place them in a designated storage area. If students refuse to store their phones when asked, they will be referred to the Principal or Vice-Principal, who may assign school consequences.
Restricting Access to Social Media
The changes announced by the Ministry of Education require school boards to restrict access to all social media platforms on school devices and networks. Starting September 1, 2024, social media platforms will only be used by students at school for educational purposes, as directed by an educator and in accordance with Superior North Catholic District School Board protocols.
Vaping and smoking
Students cannot possess or use tobacco products, e-cigarettes (vapes) or nicotine products at school. If your child is found with any these items, they must be given up and you will be notified immediately.
Cannabis
Whether at school or a school event, students cannot possess recreational cannabis, be under the influence of recreational cannabis or give others cannabis for recreational use. If your child is found with recreational cannabis — it must be given up, and you will be notified immediately.
Students can possess and use medical cannabis at school for their own personal medical purposes if they follow all laws about medical cannabis.
