Students working on Picnic Table Experiential Learning ProjectThe Grade ⅞ students at Our Lady of Fatima constructed and built wooden benches for the schoolyard. Mrs. Savage, the classroom teacher, submitted an experiential learning proposal to obtain funding to support students' understanding and knowledge of the construction sector as a skilled trade. Students worked together to build benches to enhance the schoolyard.

Math Lead Karly Baker supported the construction phase of the project to connect mathematical concepts to the construction trade. Students learned the importance of measuring accurately, estimating, and imperial to metric conversions. All while following instructions and applying problem-solving skills when the building did not quite work out as planned.

The career/life planning learning outcomes were for students to learn how to use tools safely. Students were also required to work together collaboratively and follow instructions carefully in order to successfully complete the task. Students now get to take great pleasure in observing their hardwork and dedication as students, community members and staff appreciate the beautiful benches to sit and enjoy the schoolyard scenery.

The goal of experiential learning projects is to provide students with an inquiry-based pedagogical approach to learning that provides students with opportunities to co-construct their learning through authentic hands-on learning experiences. Hands-on learning supports students’ pathways to success by knowing themselves, exploring opportunities, making decisions and setting goals for the future.
