Every Child Matter image of flagSt. Edward Catholic School honoured and showed respect on September 30, for National Truth and Reconciliation Day with a whole school assembly. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8, along with their families, members of Red Rock Indian Band and Flying Post First Nation remembered Phyllis’s story and displayed their support by wearing orange shirts.

Those who were present were moved by the power of the Grandfather Drum as students sang in their Ojibway language. Kindergarten students also joined in on the hand drum. The entire school gymnasium was filled with the voices and the heartbeat of the drum to honour the memory and acknowledgement of truth and reconciliation.

Mrs. Borg asked every student who agreed that Every Child Matters to hand stamp the Every Child Matters banner to acknowledge the slogan that every child matters to God, to their families, to their teachers and to each other. All the adults participating in the assembly were asked to join all the students in a group photo, demonstrating their commitment to every child.

Following the group photo, the assembly moved outdoors to gather in a large circle around the flagpole to raise the Every Child Matters Flag. A special thank you to our volunteers who lead those in attendance in a smudge. It was absolutely amazing to see how reverent students were while gathering. Miigwech to Peter Shabagabow for singing and drumming a flag song, while the flag was raised. It was a great honour to participate in the assembly.
