The grade 5/6 students at St. Hilary Catholic School are learning about photography and how to operate a camera. The classroom teacher, Ms Hogue, received funding to purchase a class set of professional cameras for students to use and learn within. The goal of the project is to enable students to get outside of the classroom, into the outdoors and take photos. Students will use the images to learn how to write a photo essay. Students will be deeply engaged in the writing process through hands-on learning outdoors.

Ms. Hogue has enlisted the assistance of a professional photographer, Tara Arps-Ledger with Arps Photography, to support students' scaffolded learning of how to properly and safely use the camera. Students are learning the art of composition, filters and how to use the camera to capture and express their vision.

To support students considering how the new skills they are learning will support them in their future, students are using the Xello platform to learn more about themselves and who they want to become. Students will be reflecting on their learning experience and consider how they can transfer the skills to their career goals and ambitions.
