3D Printing - Taking Things to a New Dimension

The Grade 7/8 classroom at Holy Angels Catholic School in Schreiber has been creating and designing with their newly acquired 3-D Printer.

Thank you to Mrs. Elsa Figliomeni who submitted an experiential learning proposal to purchase a 3-D printer for the school Learning Commons. Mr. Fenton has been working with students to learn the Tinkercad program and to turn ideas into actual models. Students have been creating their own 3D designs while at home and Mr. Fenton and Mrs. Petrone have been busy printing students' creations.

Tinkercad is a 3D design program that emulates a simplified autocad program. Students are learning hands-on skills that they may use in their future careers. Engineers, designers, drafting specialists, architects and contractors are examples of vocations that would use AutoCAD (computer-aided design) software.

Moreover, students are applying the creative process and design thinking. Students produce a piece, review it and improve it as a process of continuous improvement. The creative process will allow students to print their prototypes and design. Mathematical thinking and modelling are key skills practices with 3D design. It involves the following mathematical concepts - scale, ratio and rate, proportional reasoning.

It is anticipated that Holy Angels Catholic School will be designing, creating and iterating for years to come!
