Beading Project During Spirit Week

Beading Project During Spirit Week
Posted on 03/18/2021

Superior North Catholic District School Board students from grades 3-8 had a chance to try beading on canvas during Spirit Week (March 15-19, 2021). This is a beautiful Indigenous art form that you have probably seen on moccasins, leather jackets, earrings, bracelets and Regalia.

Students learned more about this skill and made their own design on a canvas using either traditional patterns like flowers and stars or other shapes like sharks, dragonflies or even Spongebob.

Students learned many different new skills; specifically, they learned skills like patience, fine motor, focus and perseverance. They also learned about culture, patterning, estimation, design, art and creativity.

Beading can be very relaxing, grounding and rewarding. We hope that learning a new skill like beading will further develop their self-esteem, self-confidence and a sense of pride.

Andrea Favel is the artist we worked with. She is from Lake Helen Reserve and is a Red Rock Indian band member. She is a First Nation woman who is passionate about aboriginal arts and crafts. She loves teaching anyone who would like to learn. You should check out her Facebook page: Andrea’s Aboriginal Mukluks Mitts and More if you would like to see more of her beautiful work.

This beading project is a collaboration project with Dilico Anishinabek Family Care. Dilico offers Cultural Programming, and Andrea is one of their amazing resources. We are so fortunate to have a great local organization to partner with.
