Catholic Education & Mental Health Week 2021

Catholic Education & Mental Health Week 2021
Posted on 05/02/2021

During the week of May 2-9, 2021 the Superior North Catholic District School Board will celebrate the significant contribution that Catholic Education has made to the community, the province and Canada and celebrate, protect and promote Mental Health.

Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for celebrating the distinctiveness of our faith-based educational system and all of the gifts and blessings that result including the foundational partnership between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes. This year's theme is "Nurturing Hope," chosen to mark the Year of Laudato Si' proclaimed by Pope Francis, to recognize the contributions of Indigenous culture and spirituality to Laudato Si' in a spirit of reconciliation, to recognize the effects of uncertainty and distancing during the COVID pandemic and to link with last year's theme of "Igniting Hope."

In her message for Catholic Education Week, Maria Vasanelli, Director of Education, asks principals to ask teachers and teachers to ask students two questions:

  1. What do you love about your Catholic school?; and
  2. How are you or your school nurturing hope in your community?

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) also designates the first week in May as Mental Health Week. This year, it runs from May 3-7, 2021. The Superior North Catholic District School Board will join organizations across Canada in raising awareness about mental health. The theme for Mental Health Week this year is 'Get Real About How You Feel' and its importance for mental health.

This is the second year that students will be participating virtually in Catholic Education and Mental Health week. As a system, we have coordinated a number of events, celebrations and activities for schools and classrooms to participate in such as the annual province-wide Mass, a Living Rosary, trivia challenges and more.

Our Mental Health and Wellness Teams has partnered with Dilico and the Rural Education and Mental Health Collective District of Thunder Bay to celebrate and engage our communities in fun and positive ways to promote our mental health during Mental Health Week 2021. The Rural Education and Mental Health Collective consist of Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales, Superior Greenstone District School Board, Superior North Catholic District School Board, North of Superior Counselling Programs, Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, Marjorie House, Children's Aid Society - District of Thunder Bay, and Home and Community Care Support Services North West. Throughout the week, we will be sharing resources and tips to help support mental wellness.
