What is diversity?

Diversity includes the acceptance and respect of various dimensions including race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religious beliefs, age, physical abilities, political beliefs, or other ideologies. (Canadian Race Relations Foundation, 2015)

What is Inclusion?

The extent to which diverse members of a group feel valued and respected.

One step to being inclusive is to use inclusive language. The Canadian Race Relations Foundation defines this as: The deliberate selection of vocabulary that avoids explicit or implicit exclusion of particular groups and that avoids the use of false generic terms, usually with reference to gender.

Here is a link to a glossary of terms provided by the CRRF. If you're ever unsure of the proper language to use, refer to this list! It provides information on different terms and whether or not they are considered appropriate or derogatory.

At Superior North Catholic District School Board we value and respect each child's diversity and go out of our way to make each child feel part of our school family.
