Letter to Parents/Guardians re Pivot to Remote Learning April 19, 2021
Posted on 04/13/2021

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As many of you are already aware, the Ministry of Education has instructed school boards to pivot to remote learning following spring break. We will continue to provide our students with the best online learning experience we can with the least disruptions. We ask for your patience and understanding during what is a difficult time for you and your children.

Student Supports

As in previous shifts to remote learning, we will continue to support students with special education needs that leverage the capacity of education workers and board professionals (e.g. behavioural experts, speech-language pathologists, and other professionals) to support remote learning. Most students with special education needs will be learning remotely during this period. In-person learning should be reserved for students who cannot be accommodated through remote learning.

Mental Health

Our board Mental Health Lead (Tracy Bryson) will continue to be available to support families in accessing appropriate community mental health support for your child and/or your family during this challenging time. Tracy can be reached at 807-228-3368 or [email protected]. Specific information and/or resources to support your child's mental health and wellbeing can be found at sncdsb.on.ca.

Our students and families can also access the following mental health resources, crisis response, crisis support residence, and 24/7 telephone services, including Kids Help Phone, which offers 24/7 counselling and referral services across the province. To use this free resource, children can call 1-800-668-6868 or text CONNECT to 686868.

School Mental Health Ontario also has a number of great resources for students, parents and families on their website at www.smho-smso.ca. In addition, child and youth mental health agencies across the province continue to provide services.

Remote Learning

Remote learning will be provided for all students in alignment with Policy/Program Memorandum (PPM) No.164: Requirements for Remote Learning. Please note that we try to make the learning experience less stressful for students by making some local accommodations as well as the creative delivery necessary to do so.

Learning Resources

The Ministry of Education recently announced the launch of two new portals, TVO Learn and TFO IDÉLLO, apprendre à la maison, which provide support for students learning remotely by accessing additional educational resources developed by Ontario certified teachers.

Your child's school will have additional instructions and communications around access to learning resources. As well, please monitor our website for updates.

Again, we thank our parents and guardians for your understanding. If you have any questions or comments, please reach out to the school principal.

Sincerely,

Maria Vasanelli,

Director of Education
