Outbreak Protocol - Letter to Parents/Guardians

Outbreak Protocol - Letter to Parents/Guardians
Posted on 09/28/2020

Dear Parents/Guardians:

I hope this finds you well, and that your children are settling back into a regular routine regardless of whether they selected at-home learning or a return to their school.

I know that many parents who decided to send their children back to school are naturally concerned for their health and safety. I want you to know that we share those concerns and that we have done everything we can to make sure we have created safe learning environments for our students.

More specifically, I want to keep you informed about what we intend to do should we experience a confirmed case or an outbreak of COVID-19 in one of our schools.

We have developed a very thorough set of protocols to help our school administrators manage this situation should it occur and they will be ready to respond when and if it does. How we manage these situations depends heavily on our cooperation with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU), and if an outbreak occurs, we will take our direction from them.

If a confirmed case or an outbreak occurs, keeping parents and our school communities informed will be extremely important, so here's what you can expect from us if it happens:

If directed by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) that we have to dismiss a class or a cohort of students in order for them to isolate, we will contact you by phone to come to the school to pick up your child.

  • When you pick up your child, we will provide you with a letter informing you about what further steps the TBDHU is recommending. A school nurse from the TBDHU may be on-site to provide further information and support.
  • We will NOT identify the student or staff member who has tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Once the affected parents have been notified, we will send out a message to the broader school community letting them know there has been a confirmed case, if a class or cohort has been dismissed, and whether any further action is required on their part.
  • As required by the Ministry of Education, we will post information about a confirmed case or an outbreak to the COVID-19 section of our web site, http://www.sncdsb.on.ca/covid-19-cases-sncdsb but not until the affected classes/cohorts and the broader school community has been informed of the situation.
  • We will not confirm any cases to the local media until the affected classes/cohorts and the broader school community have been informed of the situation.

In conclusion, it is our intention to do our absolute best to keep parents informed. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your school's Principal.

Sincerely,

Maria Vasanelli

Director of Education
