A big shout out to Ms. Michano for all her efforts to coordinate an amazing experiential learning experience for students at Holy Saviour Catholic School! Students learned how to make rag moccasins from Elder Iona Cress, from Biigtigong Nishnaabeg. Iona taught students virtually how to make rag moccasins. Over the years Iona has developed and toned her skills in the art of rag moccasins and fleece tie-knot blankets. She enjoys her craft-making and is eager to share her skills and knowledge with others. Miigwetch Mrs. Cress for your time and energy preparing all the kits and for taking the time to share with us your expertise.
The focus of the project was to engage students, promote cultural awareness and language skills. Students had the opportunity to practice conversational Ojibwe language, expand their vocabulary through new words and work with a local knowledge keeper.
Experiential learning is an inquiry-based pedagogical approach to learning that provides students with opportunities to co-construct their learning through hands-on learning experiences. Experiential learning projects support students' pathways to success - knowing themselves, exploring opportunities, making decisions and setting goals for the future.
