Letter to Parents from Director of EducationDear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back! We hope that you and your families have had a safe, peaceful and restful summer. We begin another school year with COVID-19 still a serious situation. We understand that parents are anxious and concerned but be assured we are doing all we can to keep your children learning in a safe environment. Earlier this month, a return to school guidance document was released by the Ministry of Education. The document as well as guidance from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has informed the health and safety measures that we have put in place across our system for this coming school year. We have worked diligently to prepare for classes to start next week and are optimistic about the year ahead.

From the start of the pandemic, we have learned that appropriate hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette are among the most important protective strategies against COVID-19. Our schools will continue their successful safety practices and provide refresher training for students, including the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers and hand-washing. Hand hygiene and masking will also be required by anyone entering our schools and will continue to be incorporated into our daily routines.

Schools will continue to ensure that physical distancing measures will be layered with other public health measures such as daily screening, cohorting of classes, enhanced cleaning, hand hygiene and masking. Outdoor learning opportunities will also be encouraged as often as possible.

Enhanced cleaning protocols will continue to be in place at all of our sites. Cleaning and disinfection will focus on high-touch surfaces to ensure safe and clean learning and work environments. Our extensive capital improvements over the summer have also put our ventilation and air quality systems in full compliance with Ministry standards and expectations. We will continue to work collaboratively with Public Health and the Ministry of Education to ensure we return to a pre-pandemic “normal” as cautiously and as quickly as we can.

As we approach the first day of school on September 2, please know that we have tirelessly prepared and are eager and excited to welcome your children and our staff back into our schools. We will ensure a safe and engaging learning environment for our students and staff, as well, continue transparent communication with our parent community. You can access our opening plan on our website.
