Garden-to-Table Feast at St. Edward Catholic School
The Grade 5 students at St. Edward Catholic School have realized the fruits of their labours as they enjoyed their garden-to-table feast this week. Mrs. Currie planted a garden with her students in the spring through an experiential learning project. The garden included zucchini, beans, corn, kohlrabi, lettuce and dill. Over the summer months, Mrs. Currie tended to the garden - weeding it regularly.
When students returned to school in September they were excited to see how their crops had grown. Students were excited to harvest their garden and plan out what they would make with their harvest. Students researched what recipes they could make with their vegetables. Once they decided on their recipes, students wrote a grocery list to purchase all the ingredients needed to cook their healthy snacks. Students made zucchini boats, zucchini muffins, zucchini pizzas, zucchini fries and zucchini cakes.
A big thank you to Mrs. Currie for providing students with an amazing hands-on learning opportunity growing, shopping, baking and cooking are vital life skills for youth. Thank you to Mrs. Williams for supporting students with grocery shopping, cooking and baking and Mr. Stephens for his help as well.
