Summer Learning

Summer Learning Logo

Each summer students from Superior North Catholic District School Board are invited to participate in our Summer Learning Program. During the three-week program, our team develops and implements a range of strategies to ensure successful and engaging summer programs that focus on literacy, numeracy and healthy living-based activities for students; both individually, and as part of a class or small group.

The program provides many rich learning extensions outside of the virtual classroom. Students build a sense of community and belonging within the district through partnerships with a wide range of content areas (i.e. art, science, health, wellness). A special focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics ensures 21st-century competencies and helps create career pathways for our students.

Summer learning programs offer unique occasions to connect parents with schools, teachers, and their child’s education. This is especially true in a virtual environment, where parental involvement in learning at home can increase opportunities for student success.

Summer Learning Program teachers and administrators use a range of online tools and techniques to connect with parents such as individual online teacher-parent discussions; prepared video update for parents; predetermined time for parents to contact teachers; teacher-parent emails; use of the board/school website or social media accounts; parent questionnaires and written questions from parents; recorded parent interviews; regular mail and student reports; etc.

The Discovery Box provided to each family supplies extension activities or flexible activities that can be completed at the families discretion and within their schedule. The classroom teachers also provide work to families such as online games, worksheets or reading that can be done on their own time.
