Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, all students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 in all eight schools embarked on a personalized literacy journey using the Greenfield Learning Lexia platforms. This includes the Lexia Core5 Reading program for students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 and the Lexia PowerUP program for Grades 6-8.

This year SNCDSB has rolled out a new math program that aligns with the 2020 Ontario Math curriculum. MathUp supports all educators from Kindergarten to Grade 8, and beyond.

The Grade 7/8 students from St. Edward Catholic School and St. Hilary Catholic School travelled to Thunder Bay on Monday, March 27, to visit Confederation College. Students participated in two hands-on workshops and enjoyed a complimentary lunch in the cafeteria. The two workshops engaged students in hands-on activities related to civil engineering and film production. It was a wonderful experience for students to meet instructors and tour the campus. Students had the opportunity to visit the student lounge and get to know the campus.

Starting March 20th, 2023, the Superior North Catholic District School Board Math Team is hosting a Board-wide Reflex Challenge. Grade 1-8 teachers and students are encouraged to use Reflex at a minimum of 20 minutes to a maximum of 50 minutes per week (average 10 minutes twice a week or 10 minutes daily) to boost confidence and automaticity with their math facts. This can be done in class and/or at home

St. Edward Catholic School Sensory Path

St. Edward Catholic School has a new feature in their primary hallway that has been exciting for all our students. The hallway features include large feet, logs and lily pads, the alphabet, a flower with numbers one to ten, cues to breathe in, breathe out, jump, hop, and various other movements. The large stickers adhere to the surface of the floor and create an engaging and stimulating environment for students to enjoy while travelling up and down the hall.

Superior North Catholic District School Board (SNCDSB) is committed to providing students with authentic hands-on learning experiences. To support this initiative, Skills Ontario delivered virtual presentations to over 17 classrooms throughout the district during the month of March. The presentations delivered a hands-on learning workshop centered around skilled trades, and technology - specifically the carpentry sector. Students from Kindergarten to Grade had the opportunity to learn about skilled trades and technology from valued learning partner Skills Ontario.

Ms. Hogue and the Grade 5⁄6 class at St. Hilary Catholic School in Red Rock received an Experiential Learning Grant to purchase a class set of cameras. With the help of Tara Arps, they are learning the tips and tricks of the trade in order to help them understand how to not only use the cameras but to create eye-catching photographs.

The Superior North Catholic District School Board Math Team is excited to announce that it has extended its current subscription to the ExploreLearning online math program to include Frax Math; an adaptive and game based program designed to help students learn fractions in a fun and engaging galaxy themed environment. Research-based instruction methods help students understand that fractions are numbers too by personalizing instruction for each student's needs.

The students worked with snowshoe artist Kim Asmussen and over three days completed three works of art using their snowshoes as their paintbrush and the blanket of snow as their canvas.

This October and November, the Math Learning Leads and Technology Enabled Learning Teacher successfully registered all grade 6-8 students for TVO Mathify; a free tutoring website offered by the Ontario Ministry of Education that allows eligible students to access an Ontario Certified teacher between the hours of 9 am to 9 pm Monday to Friday.

St. Hilary Catholic School in Red Rock hosted a virtual cross country race this year. Schools from across the region were invited to participate virtually by hosting their own run day and submitting their results. St. Hilary school ran their school race on Wednesday, October 27th. The school had 28 runners in total complete the 2.8 km course.

The Grade ⅞ students at Our Lady of Fatima constructed and built wooden benches for the schoolyard. Mrs. Savage, the classroom teacher, submitted an experiential learning proposal to obtain funding to support students' understanding and knowledge of the construction sector as a skilled trade. Students worked together to build benches to enhance the schoolyard.

In an effort to improve and maintain regular student attendance at all schools within the Superior North Catholic District School Board we are offering an exciting draw. For the entire month of November each full day a student is in attendance they get an entry in the draw for an XBOX. This means if a student attends 15 full school days in the month of November, they will get 15 entries into the draw. If they only attend 1 full day they only get 1 entry into the draw.
