Letter to Parents/Guardians regarding possible Pivot to Remote Learning
Posted on 12/16/2020

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As Christmas approaches, many of us know that this will be a different Christmas experience than we traditionally have. Covid-19 has changed the way we live, work and learn. It has impacted many, personally and economically. During the first wave of Covid-19 last school year, schools had to change the teaching/learning model to distance learning quickly. The Board did its best and learned to refine our methods for future considerations.

The Province now finds itself in the second wave of Covid-19, which, according to data, is worse than the first wave. In August of 2020, the Board had a virtual town hall meeting with the parent community. At that time, the Board communicated that students' safety and well-being were its priorities, and we believe the Board's actions reflect that.

As you know, the Board surveyed the school community. There was overwhelming participation, and most respondents were in favour of extending the closure of physical schools for one week after the break, with remote learning provided instead. The Board will continue to monitor the information regarding the situation as it becomes available. The Board is prepared to shift to a remote learning model for the week from January 4 to 8, 2020, while schools remain closed for this period. We will provide an update to parents on the morning of December 28, 2020. Please check our Board website/social media.

The Board understands that remote learning following the break will have an impact on families' planning, which is why the Board is providing significant notice to you of the possibility. Students with special needs will be supported during remote learning, should it occur.

We are aware of the sacrifices parents have made and continue to make for their children. The Board's staff and Trustees will continue to take steps to proactively manage a smooth and safe transition back to school in January.
