Superior North Catholic District School Board would like to welcome Carlo Porretta to his new role as System Catholicity Lead. Carlo is very passionate about Catholic education in Ontario. He studied religion and politics at the University of Bologna as part of his university education and earned a Masters of History Degree from York University completing his thesis on Saint Benedict the African. After earning his Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University, Carlo worked in various Northern fly-in communities across Ontario, as well as in Manitoba and Alberta.

With a rich background in education and leadership across three provinces, Wes brings extensive experience and a student-centered approach to his new role.

The creation of a new sensory space at St. Edward Catholic School is a fantastic development for the school community. Sensory spaces play a crucial role in providing a supportive environment for students, especially those with sensory sensitivities or special needs. This initiative not only enhances the educational experience for students at St. Edward Catholic School but also demonstrates educators' commitment to providing students with what they need to self-regulate at school.

During the month of November students and staff all over Superior North Catholic District School Board were encouraged to participate in Financial Literacy Activities to promote fluency and understanding of money concepts.

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, the Superior North Catholic District School Board (SNCDSB) held its annual Inaugural meeting for the 2022-2026 Term. Judy Wawia, First Nation Representative, was acclaimed Chair of the Board and Amanda Monks, representing the community of Terrace Bay was acclaimed Vice-Chair of the Board.

On October 24, 2022, all Superior North Catholic District School Board staff gathered for our annual Faith Development Day. It was an opportunity for our team to reflect on and grow our practice as a community of educators and a chance to develop a plan to support and celebrate the Catholic faith, culture and education within our school communities.

St. Edward Catholic School has a new feature in their primary hallway that has been exciting for all our students. The hallway features include large feet, logs and lily pads, the alphabet, a flower with numbers one to ten, cues to breathe in, breathe out, jump, hop, and various other movements. The large stickers adhere to the surface of the floor and create an engaging and stimulating environment for students to enjoy while travelling up and down the hall.

St. Edward Catholic School honoured and showed respect on September 30, for National Truth and Reconciliation Day with a whole school assembly. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8, along with their families, members of Red Rock Indian Band and Flying Post First Nation remembered Phyllis’s story and displayed their support by wearing orange shirts.

The Superior North Catholic District School Board (SNCDSB) is pleased to announce that our schools were approved by Infrastructure Canada and the Ministry of Education to receive funding through the Federal Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program; Ventilation Improvements in Schools.

Through Experiential Project funding, the Grades 1-8 students from Holy Angels Catholic School in Schreiber had the opportunity to learn a new skill: sewing!

Superior North Catholic School Board was pleased to celebrate our office expansion attached to the St. Martin Catholic School in Terrace Bay, Ontario with an open house being held June 11, 2022.

This June will be the first time that the Superior North Catholic District School Board will fly the Pride flag at all our schools as many other Catholic schools do in the province of Ontario.

The month of June is National Indigenous History Month (NIHM) and June 21st, is National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD).

St. Hilary Catholic School educators Ashley Muir and Lisa Copp set on a journey of fostering students and educators towards reconciliation and cultural appreciation. Classroom educators and students will learn four of the many Indigenous Cultural practices through hands-on learning. The project will be enriched by inviting Indigenous learning partners to the teachings that accompany the cultural knowledge.

All Grade 5 & 6 classes have been taking part in bi-weekly virtual EQAO sessions and created Classroom Math Displays with Math Lead, Karly Baker.

St. Joseph Catholic School is learning and exploring how 21st-century learning tools can support the delivery of the Ontario curriculum.

Superior North Catholic District School Board (SNCDSB) is committed to providing students with authentic hands-on learning experiences. To support this initiative, Skills Ontario delivered virtual presentations to over 17 classrooms throughout the district during the month of March. The presentations delivered a hands-on learning workshop centered around skilled trades, and technology - specifically the carpentry sector. Students from Kindergarten to Grade had the opportunity to learn about skilled trades and technology from valued learning partner Skills Ontario.

Ms. Hogue and the Grade 5⁄6 class at St. Hilary Catholic School in Red Rock received an Experiential Learning Grant to purchase a class set of cameras. With the help of Tara Arps, they are learning the tips and tricks of the trade in order to help them understand how to not only use the cameras but to create eye-catching photographs.

The Lakehead University (LU) achievement program visited St. Edward Catholic School on November 26th. Our students were blessed as all students in grades 4 to 7 were invited to participate, not only the students enrolled in this great program!
